To be a registered psychologist, completion of at least four years of formal university training plus at least two years of supervised clinical experience are required. Psychologists are bound by a professional code of conduct and ethics. Clinical psychologists are psychologists who, in addition to completing the requirements of a psychologist, have also completed two years of formal, post-graduate (master’s level) clinical training in an accredited, university based program. Further, a clinical psychologist is required to complete two more years supervised clinical training as well as continuing education on an annual basis.
Families do not need a referral to access our services. However, following discussion with your doctor, a referral may be provided enabling you to access a Medicare rebate.
We welcome your enquiries on 07 4041 7004 and are always pleased to discuss our services and your needs with you when you phone.
Usually an appointment will be organised for the child/young person and their parents/caregivers. At the first meeting, discussion about your child’s needs and a review of your child’s history will occur. We will recommend the most useful and helpful treatment for your child’s particular needs, explain the therapeutic process in detail and answer your questions.
This gives you the opportunity to meet the clinical psychologist who will be working with your child, visit our office and ensure you are comfortable with the entire process. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and make an informed decision before you commit to receiving any further services. Therapeutic techniques are chosen based on clinical judgement, professional expertise and current research evidence.
The initial consultation usually lasts 90 minutes. Review sessions and on-going therapy sessions are 50 minutes.
It depends on your child’s specific challenges and goals; however, four to six sessions is a reasonable expectation for an urgent but relatively minor issue. A chronic or deeper level problem may require 10-12 sessions or more to achieve lasting changes.
All services provided are confidential. Information will only be revealed to others with the family’s consent. However, in those unusual circumstances where failure to disclose may result in clear risk to the child/young person or to others, the clinical psychologist may disclose minimal information necessary to avert risk.
Consultation fees are due on the day of the consultation. Payment can be made by EFTPOS, Visa card, Mastercard, cash or cheque. HICAPS for direct private health insurance claims are not available. Electronic claiming for Medicare rebates is available.
Our cancellation policy is important to know, because it will keep your costs down. If you cancel within 24 hours, the full fee of the consultation may be invoiced.
